Philippine Embassy in Jordan Marks World Basketball Day with the Filipino Community

The Philippine Embassy in Jordan headed by His Excellency Wilfredo C. Santos marked the first-ever World Basketball Day on two separate occasions with the Filipino community in Jordan. On both occasions, Ambassador Santos highlighted to the Filipino community members the leadership role that the Philippines played in the creation of World Basketball Day.

The Filipino organization Chefs Basketball Association (CBA) opened its Winter League on December 08, 2023, where Ambassador Santos, together with other Embassy officials, graced the event. In his remarks, Ambassador Santos lauded the CBA’s efforts in fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie among the Filcom members who joined the basketball league. He also led the ceremonial toss to mark the beginning of the first game.

Another Filipino organization, the United Filipino Organization (UFO), also opened its Winter Basketball and Volleyball League on December 15, 2023. Ambassador Santos, together with Embassy and Migrant Office Workers (MWO) Jordan officials, were also present during the event. During the opening ceremony, Ambassador Santos enlightened the Filipino community about the Philippine-initiated World Basketball Day resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a momentous occasion on August 25, 2023. The resolution proclaimed every 21st of December as World Basketball Day.

“The historic resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly will see basketball become the first team sport to have its own day observed by the UN, reflecting the global significance of the game and its unique ability to unite people around the world. It is with great pride and appreciation that we recognize basketball as a symbol of international cooperation and unity. The Philippine Embassy commends the various Filipino community organizations for continuously using basketball to foster peace, mutual understanding, cooperation, friendship, and tolerance among the Filipinos and the local community in Jordan.” Ambassador Santos said.

The CBA and UFO hold their respective sports league every winter and summer season. END
