Philippine Embassy in Jordan Attends UN Women’s 12th Film Week Opening Ceremony
The Philippine Embassy in Jordan, led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Angeli A. Payumo, attended the 12th edition of the UN Women's Film Week Opening Ceremony on 15 April 2024, at the Rainbow Theatre in Amman.
The Film Week is an annual event organized by UN Women Jordan in partnership with the Royal Film Commission of Jordan and under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Talal. It utilizes the power of cinema in telling the story and celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
This year’s theme "Our story is not complete until all of our stories are complete" highlights the voice of women in areas of conflict and adversity, showcasing their challenges and resilience. Additionally, the agenda includes the presentation of films from different regions worldwide to ensure geographic diversity and cover a range of topics, emphasizing the value of every woman's journey wherever they are.
The Philippine Embassy in Jordan has consistently participated in the annual event as part of its efforts to promote gender equality and women empowerment, as well as to showcase Filipino culture and talent to a global audience.
This year, the 45-minute documentary “Ang Babae sa Likod ng Mambabatok '' has been chosen as the Philippines’ entry, which will be shown on Friday, 19 April 2024, at 7:00 PM at the Rainbow Theatre. This film produced in 2012 documents the art and memories of a living legend in the Philippines, Apo Wang Od, a 106-year-old woman known as the ‘Last Traditional Tattoo Artist of Kalinga.’ She has gained global recognition for her intricate line of work, which has been featured in international news and lifestyle publications, solidifying her status and placing her firmly in the spotlight as an icon of tattoo art. In February 2024, Apo Wang Od received the Presidential Lingkod-Bayan (civil servant) award in Malacañang Palace, in recognition of her impact and influence on Filipino culture and craft.
Screening is free and open to the public.
The Philippine Embassy, through its collaboration with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), looks forward to continuing its support for initiatives that empower women and promote inclusivity in all aspects of society through the medium of cinema. END
