Philippine Ambassador, Jerash University President Discuss Opportunities for Collaboration

Jerash

In a bid to further enhance the Philippine Embassy’s partnership and cooperation with educational institutions in the Kingdom, the Philippine Ambassador to Jordan His Excellency Wilfredo C. Santos met with the Jerash University President, Dr. Muhammad Ali Suwailem Al-Khalayleh, on 11 August 2024. This visit to Jerash University marks the Embassy's first-ever visit to the institution.

Ambassador Santos conveyed the Philippines' appreciation for Jordan's efforts in advancing internationalization in higher education, specifically in encouraging the enrollment of Filipino students. Additionally, he discussed the Embassy's proposal to organize a consular outreach at the University to connect with the Filipino students and provide more accessible Embassy services to them.

Dr. Al-Khalayleh welcomed the idea and mentioned that Jerash University currently has 92 Filipino students enrolled across different courses including Education and Religion studies. Additionally, there are Master’s students specializing in Islamic studies. He also mentioned that in total, there are over 2,000 International students at the University, contributing to its diversity, enhancing their overall academic excellence and cultural environment.

Both sides are open to exploring a Memorandum of Understanding between Jerash University and a suitable university in the Philippines to promote academic cooperation and mutual progress. This initiative aims to enhance the educational journey and professional advancement of both students and faculty members. This can also facilitate cultural and bilateral relations and further promote unity and collaboration between the two countries.

Jerash University was established in 1992, and the teaching process started at the university in 1993. It was the first private university in northern Jordan and includes twelve faculties: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Educational Sciences, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Sharia, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences.

Joining Ambassador Santos during the meeting were Second Secretary and Consul Angeli A. Payumo, Second Secretary Michael Supeña, Third Secretary and Vice Consul Sheila Marie G. Andales, and Cultural Officer Elijah Ang-Encarnacion. END
