PH Embassy in Jordan in Collaboration with MWO - Jordan Promotes GAD Mainstreaming during the POAS for Newly Arrived Migrant Workers

Amman, 25 August 2024 - The Gender and Development (GAD) advocacy focal persons of the Philippine Embassy in Amman, led by Mr. John Danilo G. Jiao, Jr. and Ms. Daphne S. Sarion, participated in the Post Arrival and Orientation Seminar (PAOS) conducted at the Migrant Workers Office - Jordan  (MWO-OWWA) located in Abdoun.

The PAOS, attended by nine (9) newly arrived overseas Filipinos deployed in Amman, emphasized the importance of worker’s rights with particular focus on women’s rights and the diverse cultural norms and practices in Jordan and the wider region. Overseas Workers Welfare Office (OWWA) Acting Welfare Officer and PAOS lecturer Ms. Rosalyne R. Lavin together with the Embassy GAD focal persons stressed key information regarding local labor laws, human trafficking, illegal recruitment, sexual harassment and Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) issues and concerns.

As part of the Embassy’s GAD mainstreaming activities and objective of increasing awareness on gender issues and women’s rights of OFs under its jurisdiction (large majority of its constituents are women), the PAOS provided information on resources available to migrant workers, including the comprehensive services provided by the Embassy and its attached agencies the MWO and OWWA. This included introducing the participants to the VAWC Helpdesk located onsite, which is staffed by MWO resident council Atty. Rasha Y. Al-Wawi.

During the PAOS, the Embassy also provided overseas voter registration services to maximize its outreach advocacy activities. The registration campaign successfully enrolled eighteen (18) new voters, including the PAOS participants and clients at the MWO. Additional field registration activities are scheduled for the coming weeks in Amman to ensure that all Filipinos in Jordan have the opportunity to register before the registration deadline on 30 September 2024 and be able to participate in the 2025 National Elections. Please see prior announcement regarding the schedule of field registration activities. END
