ASEAN Committee In Amman, Independent Election Commission Discuss Electoral Process in Jordan

01 September 2024 - Philippine Ambassador His Excellency Wilfredo C. Santos, together with the ASEAN Committee in Amman (ACA), met with the Independent Election Commission of Jordan (IEC), to discuss the upcoming parliamentary elections in Jordan and to facilitate knowledge exchange on the electoral systems in the Philippines, Jordan and other ACA members.

In his remarks, Ambassador Santos commended the IEC’s commitment to free and independent elections, which are vital to any democratic system. The Ambassador said that these efforts by the IEC do not only reflect Jordan’s dedication and commitment to its citizens but also serve as a model for other countries striving to uphold democratic values. He further recognized the work of the IEC in maintaining impartiality, enhancing electoral transparency, and implementing reforms that strengthen the democratic process in Jordan. He further suggested opportunities for collaboration, through workshops or exchange programs between election officials, to share best practices, technologies, and innovations, and discuss ways to improve voter education and engagement, and enhance public trust that can strengthen democratic processes in both Jordan and the Philippines.

The IEC, led by the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners H.E. Eng. Musa Maaytah, affirmed Jordan’s commitment to democracy that reflects the conscience of the people and ensures the safety and well-being of the public. H.E. Maaytah then provided a comprehensive briefing on the electoral process in the Kingdom, the reforms that have been instituted pursuant to the 2022 Political Parties Law, as well as the IEC’s efforts to ensure transparency and integrity of the elections, and to increase public participation not only in terms of voter turnout but also representation in government. H.E. Maaytah also addressed queries from the ACA on the upcoming elections in the Kingdom slated for 10 September 2024.

After the meeting, the ACA members were given a tour of the IEC facilities, as well as the various directorates responsible for different aspects of the electoral process. The tour provided insights into the operational procedures and the technological systems in place to ensure secure, transparent, and efficient elections in Jordan.

The IEC was established in 2012 as an autonomous body responsible for overseeing and administering elections in the country, ensuring their integrity, transparency, and fairness. Founded to safeguard democratic processes, the IEC manages all aspects of elections, including voter registration, candidate nominations, polling, and vote counting. It is also tasked with implementing electoral laws, promoting political participation, and ensuring inclusive and accessible elections for all citizens, including women, youth, and people with disabilities. The IEC collaborates with national and international organizations to enhance public confidence in Jordan's electoral system and support the country’s democratic development.

Established during the meeting of ASEAN Ambassadors in Amman on 29 April 2008, the ACA members are composed of the Ambassadors of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Joining Ambassador Santos at the meeting were Second Secretary and Consul Angeli A. Payumo and Third Secretary and Vice Consul Sheila Marie G. Andales. END
